NCTE Internship

NCTE Publishing Internship - Summer 2024

Sigma Tau Delta encourages undergraduate student members with interest in book and journal publications and/or publishing operations to apply for the NCTE Publishing Internship.

The internship opportunity will be held over six weeks (15 hours per week) from early July through mid-August. The intern will attend publishing meetings and work on various projects, including copyright permissions, metadata, print on demand fulfillment, and project tracking. Depending on the experience and career goals of the successful applicant, other duties such as marketing support and manuscript preparation may be assigned.

In addition to these projects, the intern will spend some of their time with key NCTE staff from other departments to learn about day-to-day NCTE operations. NCTE is a fully remote organization, so the intern must have access to a computer, video camera, and reliable internet connection.

Stipends from Sigma Tau Delta and NCTE

  • Sigma Tau Delta will award the NCTE intern a $300 stipend.
  • NCTE will provide the intern with a $1,000 stipend.

The intern will also receive a one-year complimentary NCTE membership after successful completion of the program, as well as a certificate of participation.

Internship Experience

The intern will report to the NCTE’s publishing team and will receive coaching focused on publishing best practices. Coaching will be flexible and adaptable to the student’s schedule, consisting of no more than 15 hours per week for six weeks starting in June. All training sessions will be conducted online via Microsoft Teams.

  • Strong writing and editing skills (English or Journalism majors preferred)
  • Detail oriented
  • Flexible and adaptable to potential changes in schedule
  • Experience and demonstrated success working in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally
  • Ability to work in close collaboration with others
  • Comfortable with approaching sources of information, asking questions, and quickly gathering accurate information

Candidate Membership Eligibility

Active Sigma Tau Delta undergraduate student members in good standing during the application period and members of chapters located within the 50 United States are eligible to apply. Members who have graduated or will be graduating during the 2024 spring semester are also eligible to apply.

Other

The internship may be eligible for college credit at the intern’s home institution provided it qualifies under the rules and regulations of that institution. Should the student pursue this option, it is their responsibility to submit application materials and pay the tuition and fees.

Review Process

Applications will be submitted through AwardSpring, and vetted for membership before being sent to NCTE for their review and selection.

NCTE will review all applications and will conduct interviews with finalists.

Application Dates and Notification

Applications will be accepted through AwardSpring between March 11 and April 15, 2024. The internship will be awarded by May 23. Questions regarding the online submission process should be addressed to sigmatdapply@niu.edu.

Blog Follow-up

Following the internship, stipend recipients are required to submit an article (400-600 words) for WordybyNature, the official Society blog, sharing such things as how the internship contributed to their professional growth or field of study; its impact on their future career plans; and the importance of the funding to the internship experience.

Step 1

Register for an AwardSpring account with your email address and a password.

Step 2

Complete the questionnaire, including contact and academic information, to determine if you are eligible to appy for the Internship.

Step 3

Request a letter of recommendation via the AwardSpring application.

  • Request the letter through the AwardSpring application from your Advisor, Professor of English, or Professor of Journalism.
  • Although the application is due by April 15, the recommendation letter is due no later than April 22.

Step 4
